Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Rough)

  1. Slide 1
    1) Re representation of contemporary Britain. Instead of “it represents Britain as a lovely place” how about, the music video represents contemporary Britain as optimistic and open much like the idealised representation of London in Richard Curtis’ films such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (insert screen shot) . Curtis; romantic comedies and “Friends” also focus on relationships and their ups and downs. Our music video represents the conventions of romantic comedies and sit coms.

    2) Narrative Structure: Montage – it may be wise to separate this narrative style from Goodwin. Instead … in the edit I used a montage narrative structure to effect an emotional response to emphasise the theme of nostalgia. I also used Goodwin’s theory of media language be emphasising the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, and the music and the visuals

    3) Slide 5: Re flash back you have challenged the convention of a sepia or black and white flash back but never the less you have used the convention of contrasting colouration between real time and events which happened in the past.

    4) Slide 6: No need to include link to the sound track to Friends, instead use screen shots from a text which uses flash backs.

    5) Slide 7) Delete “most music videos portray males as dominant”, we used the conventions of sit coms like Friends where there is an equal distribution of screen time for male and female characters. We also avoided hyper sexualised representation of females which is a convention of pop videos such as…..

    6) Slide 8) Delete all and instead say something like …. we used the stereotype of young people being represented as hedonistic but without the conventional negative aspects of binge drinking, sex and drugs which are a focus in Skins.

    7) Slide 11…avoid generalisations which are everywhere and instead focus on conventions of layout only. Well done for saying you used the conventional 4 panel layout but avoid saying something like most digipaks have similar colour tones, instead say the convention is that real digipaks have….and provide evidence. Discuss the conventions you used on panel 1 with an image of your panel 1 and that of a real panel 1, same with panels 2, 3 and 4 (the latter discuss the track list and institutional information etc.

    8) Slide 12: Don’t say most back panels have a track list. Instead the convention of the pack panel is…….

    9) Slide 13 : Excellent Examples

    10) Slide 14…Anaconda is a completely inappropriate choice of an example unless you want to go into a discussion about this hideous representation of a female artist. Choose an advert for say a “Friends” DVD or an advert for the release of an album from an indie pop band. Also only discuss how you used specific conventions of layout and how you are marketing the music video.

I’d say at present concise a confident Level 3 (B) ….with revisions a stronger mark but do avoid generalisations.
