Evaluation Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback? (Rough)

  1. Well organised and I'm pleased you have evaluated the contrast between male and female feedback.

    To strengthen:

    1) Reference audience theory more strongly for example:
Researchers Blulmer and Katz ..... individuals might choose and use a text for the following purposes (ie uses and gratifications):
Diversion - escape from everyday problems and routine.
Personal Relationships - using the media for emotional and other interaction, eg: substituting soap operas for family life ; identifying with artists, fans feeling as though they belong to a special group, fans of “Friends” may substitute the characters for any gaps in their own lives
    .
Personal Identity - finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts

My advice re Blumler and Katz' theory:

    1) Identify aspects of your text which act as a diversion for the strains and stresses of everyday life.

    2) Personal relationships; audiences may use the text in order to feel part of a relationship or friendship group for interaction and emotional support. Identify an aspect of your music video which may offer a viewer/user emotional support, for example the end of your music video is ambiguous but some viewers may create their own ending, and that however bleak life may seem there is a possibility of reinventing a relationship. Or if a relationship is over and the hedonistic days of youth are gone, then you are not alone, for the characters in the music video are also experiencing what the viewer is experiencing.

    3) Personal Identity: Which I think you have covered but this is about aspects of the music video which audiences can identify with for example.... Also you can reference any theories you have done with your other tutor about media and collective identity.

    4) You could reference the male gaze. For example the female audience decoded your music video more positively perhaps because they could identify with the realistic and authentic representation of girl in the music video. Because you have not represented the girl as hyper sexualised/objectified this would add to the appeal.

At present about C grade because you have not strongly referenced media theory. If you follow the above advice you grade will improve.

  2. Another point about appeal. If audiences begin to create their own endings to a story this gives the production legs. Possible fans may discuss their desired ending on social network sites, thus increasing publicity through word of mouth.
